The Big Melt is on! California’s record snowpack is now spilling into the Yosemite Valley as one off the most epic waterfall seasons ever witnessed. The Merced River crept over flood stage early Sunday morning. It’s led to the closure of some campgrounds, and there is flooding onto roadways. The meadows are filled with water, offering views not seen in a generation. Some tips: Getting there is more complicated than usual. Highway 120 remains closed, leaving only Highways 140 and 41 as ways into the park. Plan for traffic and patience when it comes to parking, visitation is surging as much as the water. California just hit an incredibly important climate milestone. The state now has more than 10,000 MW of battery storage. Just five years ago the state only had 770 MW of storage. Already, another 8,000 MW are under contract for completion. And the energy storage industry says the state is on pace to hit 50,000 MW of battery storage by 2045, which is critical if the state wants to hit its goal of completely carbon free energy. Last week, battery storage dumped 6000 MW of power back onto the grid…making it, momentarily, the largest source supplying electricity to the grid. And for 38 of the last 46 days there was more clean energy on the grid than there was demand for electricity. Governor Newsom is selling his pick to replace Dianne Feinstein in the Senate. The governor just spent about 20 minutes talking to reporters in San Francisco about Laphonza Butler. Butler has been the president of EMILY’s List, she also led SEIU 2015 in California. Newsom points to her age, she’s 44, and her ability to generate political pressure from outside groups as assets she can bring to the Senate. Newsom was also under time pressure to make an appointment. There was concern the vote could be needed to avert a government shutdown. Newsom had also promised to appoint a Black woman to the post, but he also said he would not appoint anyone currently running for the job (which sparked some backlash from backers of Congresswoman Barbara Lee).
